Kengei “Chino” Fung wins at CHRISTMAS OPEN, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Championship, Valetudo Academy in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

Kengei “Chino” Fung (Chino’s Surf School, Playa Encuentro) won top ranking in his category (2nd Place, Purple) at the Christmas Open Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Championship held at Valetudo Academy in Santo Domingo on December 3, 2011. Winners in each category were awarded airfare to Los Angeles, California to participate in the 2012 Pan American Games. Kengei has long been active in practicing the sport of Jiu Jitsu, training with the Academy Jiu Jitsu de la Costa in Cabarete, and recently earning his Purple belt in the discipline.

A Yamasaki affiliate, Jiu Jitsu de la Costa is run by Tomas “Papo” Soñe and Joe Neurauter with the mission of raising the performance level and promoting the sport of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the Dominican Republic.

Jiu-Jitsu is considered to be the oldest martial art and the most perfect form of self-defense. Emerging approximately 4,000 years ago, this fighting style, which does not involve violence or the use of weapons, can be traced back to India and the Buddhist Monks. It developed as a precise form in which the individual relies on balance, pressure points, leverage and the center of gravity to execute perfect movements requiring minimal effort. Throughout the years Jiu-Jitsu evolved, and many modern martial arts have been born including what we know today as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Kengei “Chino” Fung is originally from Santo Domingo and has been successfully operating a surf school at Playa Encuentro in Caberete for the past five years. Always helpful in assisting the younger generation of surfers, he has been an organizer of the annual Encuentro Surf Challenge and other warm-ups and events for surfers, and a judge at Dominican Surfing Federation (Fedosurf) competitions.

This season, Kengei has launched a new surf camp in Cabarete, called Dominican Republic Surf Camp, along with business partner and friend York Araya Reyes of Costa Rica. The two have teamed up to provide deluxe beach front accommodations and a fun vacation experience with Yoga, Spanish lessons and Surfing. 100% locally run and operated, they offer private guided surf tours, lessons and the vast variety of activities the Domincan Republic has to offer.
