Dominican Surfers Win at Belmar Pro, USA 2011
Rene Gough takes Fourth in Monster Energy Longboard Pro, Zion Balbuena’s Maneuvers Win One Belmar Pro’s Highest Wave-Scores
Cabarete, Dominican Republic, September 19, 2011 – Two top-ranked surfers from the Dominican Republic National Team, Rene Gough and Zion Balbuena scored big at the Belmar Pro in New Jersey, September 15-18, 2011.
Rene Gough took Fourth Place in the Finals at the Monster Energy Long Board Pro in difficult conditions and pumping Hurricane Maria swell. The other three wining competitors in the Finals were some of the best Longboarders in the USA, including Tony Silvagni who won First at Belmar and was a Gold Medal winner & Longboard Champion at the 2011 Billabong ISA World Surfing Games.
Zion Balbuena had one of the highest-scoring waves in the Men’s Open Short Board division in the Belmar Pro, holding his own in the company of East Coast’s top pros including Asher Nolan, who recently won the Quiksilver Pro New York Trials presented by Unsound. Zion Balbuena’s dynamic, explosive style and high-performance maneuvers in the Expression Session impressed the crowd and captured the attention of many photographers.
The Belmar Pro has become a regular stop off for traveling Pros, and a must-see event for Jersey Surf fans. Thousands of people line the shore at Belmar’s Sixteenth Ave. beach every year to check out this well recognized event. With a great history of waves and high level of performance, competitors come from Central America, Australia, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Europe, South Africa, and all over the US participate.
Daniel Stockdale, the official event photographer for the Belmar Pro, a fellow surfer and frequent visitor to the Dominican Republic, invited Rene and Zion to compete in the event. He and his wife Wendy generously hosted the athletes during their stay in New Jersey. Don Tarrant, Belmar Pro organizer, and owner of Eastern Lines Surf Shop in Belmar Beach also provided support to the athletes. The wonderful local community in New Jersey was extremely gracious with their help and hospitality, and Mother Nature was generous with the waves.
