Santo Domingo, August 10, 2011 – The Dominican Surfing Federation (FEDOSURF) held the fifth National surf competition of the 2011 season on Saturday, August 6 at Cabo Mongo beach, in the Jaragua National Park, located in the southwest of the country, in the province of Pedernales.
The competition, “Cabo Mongo Eco Surf” was sponsored by the Environmental Ministry, EGE-Haina Los Cocos Wind Farm, Bioenergy Consortium, Ministry of Sports and Recreation (MIDEREC), the Dominican Olympic Committee, and the Dominican Navy. Vida Azul Foundation was present for a beach clean up with community members during the event.
Nearly seventy surfers from around the country participated, from regions such as Puerto Plata, Sosua, Cabarete, Rio San Juan, Las Terrenas, Bahoruco, Boca Chica and Santo Domingo. The day-long event was graced with abundant sunshine and the solid head high swell remnants of Tropical Storm Emily.
The competition was held at a beach accessible only by boat crossing of Laguna de Oviedo, in the protected grounds of Jaragua National Park, which is the largest protected area of the country. “We are pleased to support this initiative of the Dominican Surfing Federation, and welcome this activity here yearly, with the ongoing support of the Ministry of Environment and the Dominican Olympic Committee”, said Jaime David Fernández Mirabal, Minister of the Environment.

FEDOSURF, established in 2002, is the National Governing Body of surfing in the Dominican Republic. FEDOSURF is recognized by the Dominican Olympic Committee (COD), the Ministry of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (MIDEREC), the International Surfing Association (ISA) and the Pan American Surfing Association (PASA). It is a non-profit entity, whose main goal is to support and advance the sport of surfing and high-performance athletes in the Dominican Republic.
