The Environmental Ministry of the DR and the Dominican Surfing Federation (FEDOSURF) held the World Ocean Day 2011
The Environmental Ministry and the Dominican Surfing Federation (FEDOSURF) held an all-day event, June 8, 2011 in celebration of “World Ocean Day”. After heavy rains, the sun welcomed the activity, which took place at Manresa Beach, Haina, near Santo Domingo. Attending the event were students from nearby schools, community residents, neighborhood committees and local businesses.
FEDOSURF athletes from different parts of the island gathered to perform an exhibition of the sport of surfing for all the guests. Later in the day, athletes and leaders were integrated into the various activities promoted by the Ministry of the Environment, which set up a beach volleyball court, a variety of playground activites and award-winning sand castle sculptors from the beach town of Cabarete. The days activites were accompanied by festive music and variety of foods for all to enjoy.
In this celebration, the Minister of Environment, Dr. Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal chaired the activity, urging attendees to observe their duty as Dominicans and citizens of the world to protect the vast wealth of oceans on our planet. Mrs. Ydalia Acevedo, Deputy Minister of Marine and Coastal Resources of the Ministry, addressed the crowd of nearly a hundred attendees about the great threat of discarded plastic products, which severely affect the health of the oceans. Also present at the activity was Mr. Nestor Puente, FEDOSURF president and member of the Committee on Sport and Environment of the Dominican Olympic Committee (COD) who helpsed orgazine the days event.
This activity is part of a series of events held in honor of “World Ocean Day”. “OCEAN GREEN CUP”, the IV National Surfing Championship, organized by FEDOSURF, in conjunction with the Environmental Ministry, will be held on Sunday June 12 at Manresa Beach, El Chinchorro, in Haina. The event seeks to promote environmental and sustainability awareness for GREENING OUR FUTURE AND OCEANS.
