Dominican Republic Competes in ALAS Tour 2011
Reef Classic Montanita-Ecuador, January 31-February 5
Santo Domingo, January 31, 2011 – The Dominican Republic is represented by two athletes from its National Team, Junior Gomez of Rio San Juan, and Angel Compres Ramos of Cabarete at the Reef Classic Montanita in Ecuador. The six-star prime event is the third stop of the ALAS (Latin America Surfing Association) Tour 2011, and brings together more than 120 competitors from 15 countries, and offers $20 thousand dollars in prize money.
This important event of international professional surfing occurs regularly in Ecuador and has the support of the Ecuadorian Federation of Surf. Respective champions and leaders across Latin America compete in the Junior, Open, Longboard and Female divisions.
Junior Gomez and Angel Compres Ramos recently competed in the Billabong ISA World Surfing Games, in Punta Hermosa, Peru in October 2010. Junior Gomez has been twice awarded with the prestigious ‘Athlete of the Year’ Award by the Dominican Republic Olympic Committee. An active member of the Dominican Surfing Team, Gomez has competed in numerous Latin America events, winning 2nd Place in Open Surfing in Cuba PASA 2010, and 1st Place, Junior, at the Latin Pro held in the Dominican Republic, 2003. Angel is also a member of the Dominican Surfing Team, competing in both Open and Longboard divisions. He won 2nd Place, Open Surfing at the USA-California Exchange and has scored numerous top rankings in National events.
The Dominican Surfing Federation (FEDOSURF) coordinated the trip for the athletes to Ecuador, with cooperation from the Ecuador Surfing Federation. Travel for the athletes was sponsored by Kelley & Ping restaurant in New York City. Restaurant owner Braiden Kelley and his wife, Monica Eleazar are avid surfers and frequent travelers to the Dominican Republic and offered their support to the rising athletes. Additional support for Gomez and Ramos was provided by GOUGH Surfboards, Chino Surf School, Buena Onda Surf School, Dominican Surf Adventures, and FITour.
FEDOSURF, established in 2002, is the National Governing Body of surfing in the Dominican Republic. FEDOSURF is recognized by the Dominican Olympic Committee (COD), the Ministry of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (SEDEFIR), the International Surfing Association (ISA) and the Pan American Surfing Association (PASA). It is a non-profit entity, whose main goal is to support and advance the sport of surfing and high-performance athletes in the Dominican Republic.
